G'day

Tom Wilson, Manager of The Hen House here, hoping you're keeping well!

Bit of a shorter week this week, so hopefully you can take some time to chill out after getting stuck back into work for the year. Shaping up to be a pretty interesting year of music in 2024, especially in the Australian climate - so all hands on deck for what should hopefully be a good time!

Scroll on down to check out some great reads, as well as a very important message to all our amazing customers!

Audit on Streaming Company Payouts

Thats right, the MLC (Mechanical Licensing Collective) has announced they intend to conduct an audit on Royalty Payment Accuracy for over 50 music streaming DSPs, such as Spotify, Apple Music, Soundcloud and more. The MLC is responsible for collecting and distributing royalties payable to songwriters and copyright owners by digital music services, and for the creation of a first-of-its-kind, public database that will contain critical copyright information on all musical works. Maybe a few more dollars heading artists way! You can read more about it here

Hen House Price Rise for 2024

If you're taking the time to read this, it means you are of our most valued customers. We just wanted to let you know that as of February 1st, we will be increasing the prices of our Rehearsal Rooms by $5, and increasing all hourly rates of Podcast, DJ and Recording Rooms by $2.50.
This is so we can keep up with inflationary increases and continue to offer the best creative space possible! All bookings made before Feb 1st will be at its current price - We look forward to seeing you soon!

Aussie Festivals Receive 2.5mil Boost!

In the most recent round of funding for the Live Music Australia scheme, it was announced that 37 Festivals over 150 venues across Australia would be taking a share of 2.5 million dollars in funding allocated for this year. Some beneficiaries include Splendour in the Grass (who recently took a year off to recover funds) and Groovin The Moo (to help provide more disability access). Hopefully there is more to come as we certainly need it - you can read more about it here

Music Venue Insurance Hikes

We've seen it happening here in Perth with the likes of Badlands, and now currently The Bird, but insurance hikes are playing a massive role in the struggling live venue market. Insurance companies have made almost 10,000% increases to Public Liability insurance, with costs for some rising from $90,000 a year to almost $700,000. For small venues this is almost unmanageable, and with these venues being the ones propogating young and upcoming musicians and arts scenes, we might see a ripple effect that leaves only bigger bands in big spaces that can afford the insurance! You can read more about it here

Well friends, that's me for this week!
Stay safe and have a yourself lovely weekend,
Tom
