ARIA Charts With No Locals

ARIA this week released their top 100 singles for 2023 - and has failed to feature an Aussie artist with music released in 2023. No Aussie albums spent longer than one week at number one in 2023, and only two of the local chart-topping albums – Kylie’s Tension and Troye Sivan’s Something To Give Each Other – spent two weeks in the Top 10. Overall, 46 Australian albums hit the Top 10 in 2023 (down from 56 in 2022, 64 in 2021, and 72 in 2020), and 90 made the Top 40 (down from 97 in 2022, 127 in 2021, and 131 in 2020). It seems like we aren't backing home grown music like we used to! You can read more about it here

The Weeknd First Artist to Break 4 Billion Streams

Pop sensation The Weeknd has just broken Spotify's record for the first song (Blinding Lights) to surpass 4 billion streams on the app, while also simultaneously surpassing Chubby Checkers 'The Twist' as the number 1 billboard hit of all time. Along with this, he also now displays the highest number of monthly listeners with 113 million, currently 6 million above Taylor Swift. Pretty amazing for a song only 5 years old! You can read more about it here

Blood on the Tracks - The Brian Wilson Story

If you haven't checked out Blood On The Tracks, this is your call to do so!
An amazing story-telling audio podcast, with scripted re-enactments of interviews of the life of some of music's most interesting characters. Check out the Brian Wilson story here! If this bio doesn't rope you in, I don't know what will! Check it out here
In 1966, Brian Wilson planned to follow up the Beach Boys' groundbreaking album Pet Sounds with an even bigger musical statement. He was writing a teenage symphony to God. That album, Smile, was never finished. Instead, Brian slowly unraveled, as the pressure to make something profound weighed heavy on him. He worried that he wasn’t good enough. He worried that he was a failure in the eyes of the record company, his band, his peers, and his own father. He thought his house was bugged. He thought the music he was making conjured some strange voodoo that had a disastrous impact on the real world. He became paranoid. He self-medicated with amphetamines, hash, and LSD. He held meetings in his swimming pool. He imagined people who weren’t there. And eventually, in 1967, he went off the proverbial deep end. Did the real Brian Wilson ever resurface?

Well friends, that's me for this week!
